The Lego inspired Shipping Container World Cup Stadium in Qatar.

Hundreds of repurposed shipping containers were utilized to construct the incredible Qatar World Cup 2022 stadium.

The Fifa World Cup will be held in Qatar later this year, and one of the tournament’s eight stadiums is unlike any other World Cup location or stadium ever built.

Known as Stadium 974, this 40,000 seat facility comprises reused shipping containers and can be disassembled and reassembled like Legos when the competition is over. Named after the number of containers needed for its construction, Stadium 974 is located near the Doha Port in Qatar and was designed by the Spanish architectural company Fenwick Iribarren. This Lego-inspired masterpiece also used unconventional building materials to reduce construction costs while increasing the venue’s sustainability by minimizing the amount of trash generated during construction.

To further minimize the impact of construction, Stadium 974’s waterside location and bowl shape design also provide a brilliant natural ventilation system that eliminates air conditioning.

H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), the body in charge of building Qatar’s infrastructure for the World Cup, stated: ‘We consider this innovative venue a game-changer for future mega-event hosts. It is another example of the powerful legacy our World Cup will leave.’
